LONG DOGS WA

In 2015 me and my partner Ryan decided we wanted a sausage Dog (Dachshund). Through months of searching to find the perfect registered breeder we found our girl! We unfortunately had to get her from N.S.W as we couldn't find any breeders in W.A.

I had always grown up with dogs (Boston Terriers) to be exact.

I didn't really know to much about the Dachshund breed and I have never had my own dog.I found out about the group "Long Dogs WA" and learnt so much about the breed from this community and still look at it often today.
The day finally came and we were off to the airport. I don't think I have ever been so nervous in my life, I felt overwhelmed, scared, excited. Then I saw her.....Im not going to lie I almost cried.
I was really apprehensive about the fact that she had to fly on a plane to us. Luckily she came in the crate with her brother, and the breeder put in a blanket with her mums scent and some toys.

She is now almost 4 in March 2019 and has brought so much joy to our lives (even though she's naughty sometimes ha ha), But we couldn't imagine life without her.

Our Girl Frankie

I decided to ask Bailey (Long Dogs W.A Secretary), some questions about LONG DOGS WA.

                                   Long Dogs

QUESTIONS

1. When was Long Dogs W.A created and who started it?
Long Dogs W.A was founded in 2006 by Harley and Jett, they loved catching up so much and always seemed to cause a stir when they went out walking together so they thought "why not find more long dogs like us in W.A. In April 2008 the blogsite was established and they started a social dachshund walking club. The present main leash holders are Jo Tetlow (President), Maike Schwarz (Treasurer) and myself (Secretary) with support of the other committee and a pack of helpers who work hard to organise events and fundraising.

2. You have an annual fundraiser, what is this for?
It's a fun day out for all, big and small. There will be games. races, competitions, fashion parades and more, with plenty of prizes to be won! With local stalls to browse for you and your furry friends alike. Not to mention the sausage sizzle or best of all your chance to meet hundreds of adorable dachshunds! All dachshunds are welcome and make sure you dress them in their best safari themed outfits! there will be prizes for best dressed pooches! Please respect our dachshunds are “breedist” and don’t always like socialising with other breeds, so please only bring dachshunds.
All proceeds go to help Dachshunds in need  and go towards DRA (Dachshund Rescue Australia) & Storybook Farm

3. Why a Dachshund?
They are very loyal and affectionate towards their owners and family. They make good guard dogs for such a small dog. Small in size but big in personality, we often say they are like dobermans but with their legs cut short.

4. What type of owner do you recommend for a Dachshund?
You must be patient and persistent as dachshunds can be very stubborn. They need time and company, whether it be another dachie, or dog at home or family to be present at times during the day.

5. If you could describe a Dachshund in only 5 words, what would they be?
Loyal, loving, stubborn, barkers, and borrowers

6. Do you have any training tricks and tips for a new Dachshund owner?
They are very smart dogs and easily trained but they require persistence and patience as they do what they want at times. We recommend crate training as puppies as they may need to be crate rested at times in their lives and it is challenging if they don’t ‘love’ their crates. They can also be stubborn in regards to toilet training and often reluctant to get there bellies wet if raining, grass in your backyard is of great benefit.

7. Is there anything you would like to add?
Also be prepared to have your beds hijacked as they are sneaky and love to burrow under your covers and snuggle in with you. And of course lastly they are such strange little dogs but are the best breed out.

Thank you so much Bailey XX
And a BIG thank you to all the admin staff and volunteers XX
