BILLY - DUH!

              BILLY EILISH PIRATE BAIRD O'CONNELL

I have such a endearment with a 18 year old singer/songwriter named Billy Eilish, I'm sure you have heard of her?
if you haven't where the hell have you been living for the past 5 years? You either love her or hate her.
But I truly love her music, I feel as though she has entered into my subconscious mind and has written songs from the cognitive thoughts in my own head.

Her haunting approach to her music sucks you in and transfix you, making you feel almost as though you dissociate and enter into her world. A world that is uncanny and dark. A world that so many of us can relate to whether we admit to it or not.

She first gained media attention in 2015 when she uploaded the song "ocean eyes" to Soundcloud, going viral almost over night. Written and produced by her brother Finneas O'Connell, featuring her vocals.  The songs originally created for her dance teacher who wanted to choreograph a routine using original music.

Since then Billy has continued to grow musically and become one of the most popular singer/songwriters in the world. The youngest person and second person to ever win the four main Grammy categories - Best New Artist, Record of the year, Song of the year and Album of the year - in the same year.
She is also the youngest artist to ever write and perform a James Bond theme song.

Her current album "When we all fall asleep, where do we go?" was released on March 29th 2019.Inspired by her night terrors and lucid dreams, the album juggles dark compulsions with menacing eulogies, whisper like feathery vocals with deep grisly bass. Recorded and produced with the help of her older brother Finneas in his small bedroom, in their parents Los Angeles home. In which they have continued to record in ever since.

track 1. !!!!!!!.
From the get go it starts with Billy making an audible slurp, saying " I've taken out my Invisalign and this is the album" with her and Finneas overlapping each other and descend into laughter. An unusual approach for a intro but it just shows billy's sense of humour and outgoing personality. Finneas says "the little clip of them just cracking up, it made us laugh so hard. "I just thought if we could start a really dark album with a moment of levity and light - not taking ourselves too seriously - it would make the rest of the album much more impactful for people".

track 2. bad guy
Starting with a stirring 8 bar hook of synth bass that is to be our companion throughout. A kick drum, finger snaps and TR-808 bass to provide minimalist instrumentation. Her vocals well....disturbing (in a good way). Underneath the chorus if you listen closely you can hear our Australian crosswalk walk signal. pretty fucking cool!

During the song's lyrics Billy seems to poke fun at the way people present themselves. She says she makes fun of everyone, their personas of themselves - even herself.
She quotes:
"You will never catch a bad bitch telling everyone she's a bad bitch. It's on - it's you."
" If your going around all the time saying like,'yeah, I'm bad, I'm always breaking rules, and doing this and doing that. ' Your not. I know that because I used to say that and I wasn't. Bad kids, bad boys, bad bitches, whatever, they do shit and they don't even know."

track 3. xanny.
Is a spin on the popular recreational drug "Xanax" used to treat anxiety disorders. She talks about the glorification of drug use, specifically when it comes to teenagers and young adults. Billy confesses that she has never done drugs, she's never been high, she's never smoked anything in her life, she states that she doesn't want her friends to die anymore. This is essentially what the song is about.
Opening with Billy's whisper-sweet fragile haunting voice and a deep seducing bass and layered harmonies. Followed by a intense distorted bass synth that makes you feel uncomfortable, almost like you are inhabiting the character of an addict.

Track 4. You should see me in a crown.
Inspired by a tv show Billy and her brother were watching one day called "Sherlock", the villain Professor Moriarty uttered a phase she and Finneas found "jiggy". The phase in question was "Honey you should see me in a crown."
The opening of the song sounds distinctly like a knife being sharpened. Heavy synth keys with Billy humming underneath it. This song leads you anticipating wondering where it will go. With blaring synths and rapid-fire hi-hats, this song is powerful.

Track 5. All the good girls go to hell.
Even though Billy grew up in a Christian household, she is not known  now for her faith. In this song she imagines God and the devil teaming up to pour scorn on how humans are messing up planet Earth.
They thought it would be fun to write a song from the prospective of the devil and God talking to each other about climate change saying, "Whats going on? Why did they do all this?".
Opening with what sounds like a build up strike of a clock, then with Billy's distorted effect vocals followed by a hook bass line, with some pretty straight and solid drum beats.

Track 6. Wish you were gay.
This song has been getting mixed reactions from the public.
Having a more slow tempo since the other songs on the album thus far. Billy expresses her feelings towards a guy who's not interested in her like she is interested in him. The title "wish you were gay" refers to how she'd feel better if he was into the same sex rather than just not being interested in her.
The track ends with a quirky clip of an audience clapping, similar to a vintage tv show.

Track 7. When the party's over.
Carrying on with her common theme of heartbreak and love in her songs. So "when the partys over," I feel like thats such a sentence. its like "I'll call you when the partys over," you're on the phone with someone and you can't hear them, they can't hear you, its loud they're mad at you for some reason. I feel like everybody's had that struggle with someone - somebody on the phone yelling for some reason, and your just like, "You know what? Fucking leave me alone." The track tells the story of a up and down and perhaps difficult toxic relationship. The song attempts to seek closure from this hurtful relationship she just managed to walk out. As you listen the song there is a rather nice build up to the chorus, adding energy to the song.

Track 8.8.
The song "8" has no specific resemblance with the context of the song, which tells a story of a eroding love story.
billy wrote this song from the perspective of a past boyfriend that she broke up with and hurt. She said that when people hear the song they will think " oh poor Billy she's so hurt" and it really was....I was just a (expletive) for a minute. I really was the only way I could deal with it was to just stop for a second and put herself in that persons place.
This is a somewhat lullaby-like sounding intro with a ukulele featuring just Billy's raw vocals which manipulates her vocal sound to sound like a young child.

Track 9. My Strange addiction
A intense and vibrant track, this track also contains many dialogues from one of Billy's favourite tv shows The Office.
A heavy bass synth followed by a sharp straight drum beat.
Most of Billy's lyrics are ambiguous enough to allow the listener their own interpretation.
"My strange addiction" follows the theme of a girl being in love and not realising it. She feels feels differently inside and she cannot explain what it is. Their relationship burns like a dry gin on her throat; and his touches borderline pain and pleasure, and this has Billy craving for more.

Track 10. Bury a friend.
It can only be described as dark brilliance. Rapper Crooks booming voice introduces "Billy". Drowning in layers of vocal effects and there's a playful trickery in each hook. The song seems to focus more on emotions than showcasing her vocal ability. She puts on a hushed talking approach which is sure to put you on edge. The track is haunting in more whys than one. In addition to Billy's careful and chilling vocals, her lyrics are quite dark as seen with lines like " I wanna end me' 'honestly thought I would be dead by now". She continues to add in ambience as heard throughout the album with some of "The Office" audio, abrupt shrieks, old school alarm clock rings, deep-voiced male sternly saying "Billie" and warning "be careful".

Track 11. ilomilo
The song was apparently inspired by the computer game ilomilo, which is a 2010 puzzle game where the goal is to reunite two characters named "lIo" and "Milo".
The track is a mid tempo song with a heavily feature video game style echo. With a intro of a cool electronic kit sound. Billy bringing out her whisper like delicate voice. Ilomilo is about a person being separated by someone they love dearly and are trying to find them again. The person is afraid that their loved one will depart and never return. Ultimately the song finishes with the chorus, where the person has realised they are alone and their loved one gone.

Track 12. listen before I go.
The song speaks about suicide, and depression and what can come out of depression. Its about Billy telling her lover to listen to what she has to say before she commits suicide. Opening with a piano-centric sound. At the end of the song Billy asks her boyfriend to tell her friends she loves them and will miss them. Sirens can be heard in the background, suggesting the singer has already committed suicide. Billy has previously discussed her own struggles with depression. Billy has said that the last 3 tracks are "listen before I go" "I love you" and "goodbye" with the intention for them to form a sentence.

Track 13. I love you
A heartbreaking acoustic cinematic ballad, finds Billie stuck in a complicated relationship. He said he loves her, but his actions speak otherwise. Billy truly loves him but she doesn't want to. The song has a faint voice of an airline attendant and the sound of a plane taking off during the second verse.

Track 14. Goodbye
In "goodbye" Billy kind of plays with the lyrics of all the tracks. Starting from the first line, Billy restates a lyric from each of the songs on the album in reverse order. It was Billys idea in which Finneas thought was really cool, the other thing he did was layered in, really quietly, clips of all the songs on the album and played them backwards.

Over all I love this album as a whole, I feel so much with her songs and I can't wait to see what she comes out with next!!

PEACE X
